AoFAQ Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

This Regulated Qualification is ideal for anyone wishing to become an emergency first aider. This provides learners with skills and knowledge to deal with first aid situations in low risk workplace environments for the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982 purposes. As this is a Regulated Qualification, an Employer who obtains training from an AoFAQ Approved Centre is not required to carry out any due diligence on the training provider in order to ensure the suitability of the training (HSE statement). Also approved by the Association of First Aiders.

Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:

This Qualification provides learners with skills and knowledge to deal with first aid situations in low risk workplace environments or workplaces with a low number of employees. (See AoFAQ Level 3 First Aid at Work for higher risk or larger number of employees) The qualification is for the purposes of the  Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982. however is is also highly relevant for a wide range of first aid situations.

The AoFAQ Level Emergency First Aid at Work is a Regulated Qualification which removes the requirements for the Employer to carry out due diligence on the training provider. See HSE GEIS3 "A guide for employers - Selecting a first-aid training provider" for details.

 

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

1. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider.

1.1 Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
1.2 Describe how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
1.3 Identify the need for consent to provide first aid

2. Be able to assess an incident.

2.1 Conduct a scene survey
2.2 Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
2.3 Summon appropriate assistance when necessary

3. Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty

3.1 Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
3.2 Demonstrate CPR using a manikin
3.3 Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
3.4 Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
3.5 Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure

4. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking

4.1 Identify when choking is:

  • mild
  • severe

4.2 Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking

5. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding

5.1 Identify the severity of external bleeding
5.2 Demonstrate how to control external bleeding

6. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock

6.1 Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock
6.2 Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock

7. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries

7.1 Identify how to administer first aid to casualty with:

  • small cuts
  • grazes
  • bruises
  • small splinters

7.2 Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds

Guided Learning Hours: 8  (this qualification requires a minimum of 6 classroom hrs.) Where this qualification is undertaken in less than 8 hrs, additional learner instruction may be undertaken through research i.e. Internet, reading or work based activities.

Assessment:

The practical Learning Outcomes are assessed by observation. 

  • Multi Choice Questions (MCQ) for theory and underpinning knowledge. 
  • The Practical demonstration of skills

To Awarded this qualification the Learner must 100% pass of the assessments carried out by observation together with a percentage pass in the MCQ paper.

Trainers, Assessors and IQA's must hold current membership, of the Faculty of Pre Hospital Care the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh at Level 3 or above

   Internal Quality Assurers must:

  • Those involved in the internal quality assurance of these qualifications (IQA’s) must have knowledge and competency in the subject field as well as knowledge and  competency in internal quality assurance. 

     An acceptable portfolio must show:

  • Occupational knowledge and competence in the subject ‐ evidenced by:
    - Holding a relevant subject qualification or suitable experience
  • Knowledge and competency in internal quality assurance – evidenced by:
    - Holding a qualification/completing CPD training or working towards a suitable qualification. 
  •  Internal Quality Assurers must:

  •  Have knowledge of the requirements of the qualification they are quality assuring at the time any assessment is taking place.
  •  Have knowledge and understanding of the role of assessors.
  • Visit and observe assessments.
  •  Carry out other related internal quality assurance.
  •
